Kinoosao (partial Transferred)
The community of Kinoosao is the most northern community within the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation territory. It is located approximately halfway up the eastern shore of Reindeer Lake and is accessible by road from the Manitoba side by Secondary Highway No. 394 – 93 kms west from Lynn Lake. Kinoosao residents have close family ties to the community of Southend and access Southend when travel permits (111 Kms south) only by boat in the summer (3 hour boat ride) and snow machine in the winter (2 ½ hour ride).
PBCN Health employs a Transportation Clerk half time to facilitate travel arrangements required by community residents for medical appointments.
Kinoosao also receives community health nursing support from the Arthur Morin Memorial Health Centre in Southend. A Community Health Nurse would plan two trips a year by air to deliver immunization services and do home care assessments as required.
The community does not offer school past grade nine and has not much to offer for employment.
The community is comprised of 10 houses with a population of 58 residents and an average house occupancy rate of 5.2 persons. Community residents travel to the larger communities in Manitoba (Lynn Lake or Thompson) for amenities such as shopping, medical care and entertainment.
